The original railway line was opened in 1874/5 and the last train to travel the line was in 1951.

Louth County Council successfully constructed 6.2 km of Greenway in 2013 from Omeath to Carlingford Marina, along parts of the former Dundalk, Greenore & Newry Railway line.

The idea of a trail along the former railway line developed from local consultation and then successfully secured funding from the Smarter Travel Unit of the Department of Transport in Dublin in 2012. The Greenway developed from over 30 separate access agreements with landowners. The fabulous cooperation of the many landowners involved has been crucial in the progress made to date.

Construction of the Greenway between Omeath to Carlingford Marina was carried out in 2013-2014.

The Greenway has proved a very popular public amenity and we look forward to extending this trail to Newry City.
